What the Two Blood Pressure Numbers Mean

Health monitoring at home

Understanding the two numbers on a blood pressure reading can make your log easier to discuss with a healthcare professional.

Systolic and diastolic

The top number is systolic pressure, the pressure as the heart contracts. The bottom number is diastolic pressure, the pressure while the heart relaxes. Categories and treatment decisions should be interpreted using current clinical guidance and your personal health history.

Make the log useful

Measure under similar conditions, record both numbers and note unusual circumstances such as stress, exercise or missed medication. An upper-arm monitor with a properly fitting cuff, such as the iHealth Track, can support consistent home checks.

This is general education, not medical advice. Ask a qualified clinician how to interpret your readings.
